Horror Classics 07: Corpse Vanishes/The Devil Bat Overview

The Corpse Vanishes--Lorenz (Bela Lugosi) kills innocent women to keep his wife young by pumping their blood into her body. Perhaps the most horrific of Bela Lugosi's Monogram series, it is also the silliest in many ways, especially when the audience finds Bela sleeping in a coffin for no discernable reason. 1942 - USA - 64 min

The Devil Bat--Features Bela Lugosi as a chemist who plots an elaborate revenge scheme on his business partners, whom he feels have cheated him out of his share. To this end he creates giant mutant bats to kill rip them into shreds. 1941 - USA - 67 min - B&W

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsThe only thing worse than being left standing at the altar is having its fall over dead wife in the middle of the service. The body disappeared as it opens, is exactly what is happening, even worse, the bodies of the bride getting stolen. The police are baffled, but hard-nosed female reporter Pat Hunter is determined to solve the mystery and make a name for herself in journalism. Following the leads to the house of Dr. Lorenz (Lugosi) and ends with the most terrifying night of herlife. Lorenz has a personal detail - a rather troublesome servant and his two older sons, one a dwarf and the other apparently dumb and obviously stupid bent-over colleagues. Strangest of all, though, is the wife irascible Lorenz. Of course, the countess has reason to complain because she is in constant struggle against old age and death. Lorenz has devised a way to maintain youth and beauty of his wife, the only problem is that it requires the periodic removal of a certain amount of essenceof life of young girls. Why blushing brides are specimens of choice is never really explained. In any case, Pat struggled to find a way to trap the good doctor and convince her boss that she is telling the truth about the things he has discovered.

Interestingly, there are some obvious similarities between this film in 1942 and 1931's Dracula: Lugosi plays an evil man who must steal the life essence of beautiful young women in order to keep mortality at bay; secretly Lorenzenters the room of his guests during the night and looks down at them with his eyes Lugosi is famous for, Lorenz and his wife sleep in coffins, and the dull, eternally fall-backed assistant (called Angel of all things) can be Renfield than Dracula. The plot is rather weak at points, but I love the campiness of it nostalgic (and, apparently, the Mystery Science Theater 3000 gang did too). I would rank this film among the best horror movies of that golden age of cinemafright. Lugosi fans will surely want to have the corpse disappears in their video library as it features one of his best performances.

The plot of Devil Bat does not sound impressive, but the performance of Bela Lugosi film earned five stars from this reviewer. Lugosi plays Dr. Carruthers, a physician and scientist loved by everyone in the village of Heathville, is the last person that anyone suspected when a series of strange murders take place. The first three victims were all childrenof the rich and powerful families and Heath Morgan. These two families made their fortunes, it is found in one of the formulas of Dr. Carruthers', and all the doctor came out of the deal was a miserable ten thousand dollars from their millions. Ah, yes, we have a reason. Of course, these are ordinary murders, seems to have been made by some kind of unknown wild animal. He could be a bat, of course, because the murderess was certainly a rather large specimen. Carruthers plan 'is hokey, butbrilliant. It still works for the cosmetics company, and he just found a new experimental formula aftershave. Of course, he wants the moors and Morgan to try the product directly, prior to marketing - only a few drops spread around the neck where the skin is still tender. He does not bother to tell his victims that the bats really, really hate the smell of the secret ingredient in the formula, nor does it mention that he has found a way to use electrical stimulation fortransform an ordinary bat in a Bat Devil. Everything is going according to plan until a nosy reporter shows up and starts to snoop around.

Lugosi is great in this movie. In 1940, he had the whole act mad scientist to a science, and his secret frowns are enriched with the right touch of madness in his eyes. Best of all is the way it tells its victims "Goodbye," a voice that once left them in the short-to-be clutches of the Devil Bat. One thing that worries me the grand oldhorror films like this is the fact that filmmakers always felt compelled to provide some comic relief in the form of a character Goofy - this time, we are a newspaper photographer "One Shot" McGuire who is more interested in taking pictures of Heath French maid any more stupid old bat. The Devil Bat is not in itself very impressive, not the grainy, far from perfect print in black and white, I'm sure it would have been quite ridiculous. It never moves, even when Carruthers is the manipulationit is more like a hawk or eagle to me when in flight, and his attacks on unsuspecting victims fall makes me think of the scene where Frank Drebbin Naked Gun battles against a towel thrown in his face. None of that matters, though, because Lugosi is just so fun to watch.

The double feature DVD from Roan's pretty good overall quality. The main reason to buy this DVD is a decent copy of the corpse disappeared. For the best DVD of The Devil Bat, the DVD with the seal Lugosi is the only one to get.

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby Digital Remaster) --- Bela Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Blasko Dezső (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for her portrayal of "Dracula" of American Broadway stage production and subsequent film of Bram Stoker's classic vampirehistory.

Later in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. (1953) (where its role had not sense the rest of the film) and a scientist, Dr. Frankenstein-like mad in "The Bride of the Monster" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier offilm was ostensibly intended to help pay the costs of treatment. The extras on an early release DVD of "Plan 9 from Outer Space" (1959) includes an impromptu interview with Lugosi on his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, inDracula's cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood then thought about Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi additional strokes - - note, however, the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face in his mantle in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi is died during production, and it shows. Horror Movies Customer ReviewsCorpse and a Bat - Ned - Eldersburg, Maryland United States
The Devil Bat, Dr. Carruthers (played by Bela Lugosi) raises large bats that are magnified by a special electrical machine. When the company he works for is enhanced because of the perfumes and colognes has developed that seeks revenge with these large bats that he trained to "hate" a particular colony shaving. His revenge against his employer and family, but a reporter puts together the bats and Cologne, and sprinkle on Carruthers. One of the last scene is a giant bat in progressafter Carruthers.

In The corpse disappeared, Dr. Lorenz (played by Bela Lugosi) maintains his young wife to kidnap young girls and brides extracting fluid from their glands and then use the liquid of his wife. It does so by brides child abduction, using a special orchid which puts them in suspended animation. He holds the brides in an underground vault until they are "fluid" run out.

The Devil Bat and The Corpse Vanishes Bela are not the best work, but I think most fans Bela Lugosienjoy these two.

The image quality on the DVD are not crisp - but there are times when some of the old quality movies need a little 'less to give them their charm.
