Frankenstein [VHS] Overview

"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" For years unheard, this line has been restored, along with the legendary scene of the childlike monster tossing a little girl into a lake, in James Whale's Frankenstein, one of the most famous and influential horror movies ever made. Coming off the tremendous success of Dracula, Universal assigned sophomore director Whale to helm an adaptation of Mary Shelley's famous novel with Bela Lugosi as the monster. When Lugosi declined the role, Whale cast the largely unknown character actor Boris Karloff and together with makeup designer Jack Pierce they created the most memorable monster in movie history: a towering, lumbering creature with sunken eyes, a flat head, and a jagged scar running down his forehead. Whale and Karloff made this mute, misunderstood brute, who has the brain of a madman (the most obvious of the many liberties taken with Shelley's story), the most pitiable freak of nature to stumble across the screen. Clive's Dr. Frankenstein is intense and twitchy and Dwight Frye set the standard for mad-scientist sidekicks as the wild-eyed hunchback assistant. Whale's later films, notably the spooky spoof The Old Dark House and the deliriously stylized sequel The Bride of Frankenstein, display a surer cinematic hand than seen here and add a subversive twist of black comedy, but given the restraints of early sound films, Whale breaks the film free from static stillness and adorns it with striking design and expressionist flourishes. --Sean Axmaker

Scream Five-Film Set (Scream 1-3 + Two Documentaries) [Blu-ray] Overview

Scream: After a series of mysterious deaths befalls their small town, an offbeat group of friends led by Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) become the target of a masked killer in this smash-hit “clever thriller” (The Washington Post) that launched the Scream franchise and breathed new life into the horror genre.

Scream 2: Away at college, Sidney Prescott (Campbell) thought she’d finally put the shocking murders that shattered her life behind her…until a copycat killer begins acting out a real-life sequel. Now, as history repeats itself, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and other Scream survivors find themselves trapped in a terrifyingly clever plotline where no one is safe – or beyond suspicion – in this “delicious, diabolical and fun” (Rolling Stone) sequel.

Scream 3: While Sidney Prescott (Campbell) lives in safely guarded seclusion, bodies begin dropping around the Hollywood set of "Stab 3," the latest movie based on the gruesome Woodsboro killings. The escalating terror finally brings Sidney out of hiding, drawing her and the other survivors once again into an insidious game of horror movie mayhem that’s a “suspenseful, clever and very entertaining” (NBC-TV) installment in the wildly popular Scream franchise.

Scream Five-Film Set (Scream 1-3 + Two Documentaries) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Scream
With the smash hit Scream, novice screenwriter Kevin Williamson and veteran horror director Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) revived the moldering corpse of the teen horror picture, both creatively and commercially, by playfully acknowledging the exhausted clichés and then turning them inside out. Scream is a postmodern slasher movie, a horror film that cleverly deconstructs horror films, then reassembles the dead tissue, and (like Frankenstein's monster) creates new life. When a serial killer starts hacking up their fellow teens, the media-savvy youngsters of Scream realize that the smartest way of sticking around for the sequel is to avoid the terminal behaviors that inevitably doom supporting players in the movies. They've seen all the movies, and the rules of the genre are like second nature to them. One of the scariest/funniest setups features a kid watching John Carpenter's seminal Halloween on video. As Jamie Lee Curtis is shadowed by Michael Meyers and the kid on the couch yells at her to turn around, Craven reverses his camera and we see that the kid should be taking his own advice. The fresh-faced young cast (including Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette) is fun to watch, and their tart dialogue is sprinkled with enough archly self-conscious pop-culture references to make Quentin Tarantino blush. --Jim Emerson

Scream 2
Fully aware of its status as the sequel to the surprise hit thriller of 1996, this lively follow-up trades freshness for familiarity, playing on our affection for returning characters while obeying--and then subverting--the "rules" of sequels. Once again, movie references are cleverly employed to draw us into the story, which takes place two years after the events of Scream, at a small Ohio college, where the Scream survivors reunite when another series of mysterious killings begins. Capitalizing on the guesswork involving a host of potential suspects, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson have crafted a thriller that's more of a Scream clone than a genuinely inventive new story. But the shocks are just as effective, and escalating tension leads to a tautly staged climax that's simultaneously logical and giddily over the top. Background information for trivia buffs: to preserve the secrecy of plot twists, copies of the screenplay were heavily guarded during production and restricted to only the most crucial personnel. When an early draft was circulated on the Internet, screenwriter Kevin Williamson did rewrites, and subsequent drafts were printed with red ink on brown paper, eliminating the threat of photocopying. None of the cast members knew who the killer was until the final scenes were filmed! -- Jeff Shannon

Scream 3
When Randy the video geek rattles off the rules of surviving a horror movie in Wes Craven's Scream, he speaks for a generation of filmgoers who are all too aware of slasher movie clichés. Playfully scripted by Kevin Williamson with a self-aware wink and more than a few nods to its grandfathers (from Psycho to Halloween to the Friday the 13th dynasty), Scream skewers teen horror conventions with loving reverence while re-creating them in a modern, movie-savvy context. And so goes the series, which continues the satirical spoofing by tackling (what else?) sequels while sustaining its own self-contained mythology. Catty reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turns grisly murders into lurid bestsellers, a cult of killer wannabes continues to hunt spunky psycho-survivor Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for their 15 minutes of fame, and a cheesy movie series (Stab) develops within the movie series.

Scream remains the high point of the series--a fresh take on a genre long since collapsed into routine, but Scream 2 spoofs itself with witty humor ("Why would anyone want to do that? Sequels suck!" opines college film student Randy), and delights with more elaborate set pieces and all-new rules for surviving a horror movie sequel. The endangered veterans of the original film reunite one last time for Scream 3, which plays out on the movie set of Stab 3. (It's a trilogy within a trilogy!) With Williamson gone, replacement screenwriter Ehran Kruger tries to mine the formula one more time. It's a little tired by now, and pale imitations (Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer) have further drained the zeitgeist, but the film bubbles with bright humor, and director Craven is stylistically at the top of his game. As a trilogy, it remains both the most consistently entertaining and self-aware horror series ever made. --Sean Axmaker

Still Scary: The Ultimate Scary Movie Retrospective / Scream: The Inside Story

As most horror devotees already know, the Scream franchise was fraught with production troubles from its inception through its fourth and apparently final entry, and the two documentaries included on the fourth disc of the Scream collector's set (both of which are feature length, which explains the confusion over the set's "5 Film" label) represent the first attempt to bring together a cohesive portrait of the series' behind-the-scenes history. Both Still Scary: The Ultimate Scary Movie Retrospective, by ShockTilYouDrop.com editor Ryan Turek, and Scream: The Inside Story, which was produced for the Biography Channel by much of the same creative team behind the epic Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, cover the same ground, which is director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson's struggles with the MPAA, producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, and a myriad of other outside forces throughout the series through interviews with many of the production principals, most notably stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Jamie Kennedy (Williamson and Courteney Cox are conspicuously absent from both projects). Still Scary offers the more comprehensive presentation, thanks largely to its inclusion of such less well-known players as Scream 3 scribe Ehren Kruger, who capably defends his much-maligned script, and offers welcome touches of visual and editorial style in its "quick cuts" segments, which present tidbits of info that, while not entirely germane to the documentary's main thrust, provide the sort of detail that dedicated fans of the series will love. The Inside Story delves deeply into pre-production issues, from Craven's reluctance to helm the series to the battle over Ghost Face's iconic mask and costume. In-depth discussions of the characters through dialogue readings by the original cast and screen tests, as well as split-screen comparisons between the original NC-17 edit and the R-rated theatrical cut, are equally invaluable. Though some viewers may argue with the documentaries' conceit that the Scream franchise reinvented the horror genre--reinvigorated is a more accurate description--the wealth of information presented in both films sets the bar for future horror documentaries. --Paul Gaita

A FRANTIC CALL FOR HELP FROM A REMOTE RESEARCH STATION ON MARSSENDS A TEAM OF MERCENARY MARINES INTO ACTION. THE DESCEND INTO THE OLDUVAI RESEARCH STATION, WHERE THEY FIND A LEGION OF NIGHTMARISH CREATURES, LURKING IN THE DARKNESS, KILLING AT WILL.BASED ON THE HUGELY POPULAR VIDEO GAME.

Doom (Full Screen) Specifications

Grab your BFG and get ready to kick some Martian-demon butt in Doom, another entry in the increasingly crowded videogame-to-movie genre. The Rock plays Sarge, the commander of a squad of Marines sent to investigate a disturbance at a scientific research facility on Mars. Among the squad is John Grimm (Karl Urban, who played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings), who turns out to have had a previous relationship with Samantha (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day), the scientist who's accompanying the Marines in order to retrieve some vital data from the facility. Based on id Software's legendary first-person shooter, Doom tries its best to look like a game, with dark, angled corridors, ferocious creatures appearing out of nowhere, and a variety of lethal weapons that will, like the aforementioned BFG, warm the cockles of a gamer's heart. There's also one memorable sequence that actually turns the movie into a first-person shooter; the good news is that in the context of the whole film, it's not quite as goofy as it might have been. And that's not a bad frame of reference for the film in general. Considering the game-to-movie field includes such duds as Wing Commander, if you go into Doom with low expectations, you'll probably find it a surprisingly respectable horror/sci-fi thriller in the Resident Evil vein (including its somewhat obligatory subplot of corporate wrongdoing). Also in its favor is that it's unabashedly R-rated, for the extreme gore that is a trademark of the game. After all, the purpose of the movie is to pack scares and thrills into a setting that gamers will quickly recognize. In that sense, it qualifies as a success. --David Horiuchi

Warlock [VHS] Overview

Clever and original, this horror film directed by Steve Miner (Forever Young) stars Julian Sands as a 17th century warlock who escapes the gallows and is transported--along with the witch hunter who brought him to trial (Richard E. Grant)--300 years into the future. Running loose in contemporary Los Angeles, Sands's supernatural monster sets about reuniting the scattered portions of a Devil's Book that will reveal the true name of God and thus destroy mankind. In a great twist, the last bit of the book is in a very interesting place: the grave of Grant's character, who has enlisted the aid of a woman (Lori Singer) in a hurried effort to stop imminent disaster. Genuinely involving, Warlock is aided immeasurably by sharp performances from the equally eccentric Grant (Withnail and I) and Sands (Naked Lunch). Miner invents his way through a kind of simultaneously new and old horror tale, and the results are taut, fun, and surprising. --Tom Keogh

Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (The H-Man / Battle in Outer Space / Mothra) Overview

Toho, the most famous of all Japanese movie studios, first made its name in the West for the extraordinary masterworks of Akira Kurosawa. But they really struck box office gold with the wildly colorful kaiju eiga (monster movies) that began in 1954 with the original Godzilla (Gojira), the creation of director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya. Now for the first time on DVD -- and in their original Tohoscope aspect ratios -- Sony Pictures presents three Honda classics that display the enormous breadth of the Toho magic during its glory years. The H-Man, Battle in Outer Space and Mothra are presented in both their Japanese and U.S. versions. So travel back to the days before CGI, when special effects were real and the results were spectacular!

Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (The H-Man / Battle in Outer Space / Mothra) Specifications

Here's a treat for fans of classic '60s science fiction from Japan: a trio of genuinely entertaining adventure-fantasies from Toho, the company that unleashed Godzilla upon an unsuspecting world. The giant lizard is nowhere to be found in this set, but his director of choice, the underappreciated Ishiro Honda, is at the helm for each of the films included here, and thanks to the inclusion of the original Japanese version of each picture along with the American re-edit, fans can finally see his true vision for each project. 1962's Mothra is perhaps the best known of the trio--the spectacular monster-god moth was a staple in Godzilla's exploits for over four decades, and its origin story retains all the city-wrecking excitement of the best Toho monster rallies, but with a level of humor and depth that wasn't always present in their subsequent efforts. 1960's Battle in Outer Space and 1958's The H-Man may be familiar only to the most devoted Toho fans, but they both offer their respective pleasures to newcomers; Battle is a charmingly naive and pulpy alien invasion story driven by the impressive miniature work of Toho's resident special effects wizard, Eiji Tsuburaya, while H-Man is a moody thriller that addresses the lingering aftereffects of the atomic bombing of Japan through its chief villain, an irradiated gangster whose touch dissolves his victims. Tonally, it's a far cry from the other titles in the collection, but its noirish vibe, unsettling violence, and catchy score (by Masaru Sato) should make it a terrific discovery for those only familiar with Toho's monster movies.

The Toho Collection spreads its features over three discs, which have been packaged in an unfortunate and potentially damaging arrangement that stacks all three discs on a single spindle; thankfully, the extras make up for this decision (and the unappealing cover art). Toho historians and authors Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski, who have contributed informative and thoughtful commentaries to Classic Media's spate of Toho/Godzilla DVDs, deliver the same for Battle and Mothra; their contributions here not only include recorded interviews with members of the film's cast and crew, but their passion for the projects and Honda's work do much to dispel the decades of dismissive criticism. Unfortunately, no commentary is present for H-Man (in its stead are trailers for other Sony collections). The quality of the restoration to both the American and Japanese versions of the films is also exceptional. --Paul Gaita

Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. Orphan [Blu-ray] Overview

Tragedy seems to follow nine-year-old Esther. She was orphaned in her native Russia. Her last adoptive family perished in a fire Esther barely escaped. But now the Coleman family has adopted her, and life is good. Until a classmate takes a serious fall from a slide. Until an orphanage nun is battered to death. And until Esther’s new mom wonders if that tragic fire was an accident. From Dark Castle Productions comes Orphan, bringing stunning new twists to the psychological thriller and locking audiences in a tightening vise of mystery, suspicion and terror. You’ll never forget Esther. So sweet. So intelligent. So creative. So disturbed.

Features:
- Mama's Little Devils: Bad Seeds and Evil Children: cast and crew reinvent the evil kid genre and discuss notable movie psychopaths
- Additional scenes, including an alternate ending
- BD-Live features

Orphan [Blu-ray] Specifications

A bad seed with a Russian accent, 9-year-old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) is a nasty little girl with a nasty little plan. Unfortunately, this malevolent tyke has landed in the home of adoptive parents Kate and John (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard), an unsuspecting couple with two kids of their own and considerable grief over recent family tragedies. It doesn't take long for Esther to make her creepy presence known, as broken limbs on the playground and torched tree houses can attest. Give this movie some credit--the psychological underpinnings are all set carefully in place: Maternal trauma? Check. Backyard pond as emotionally charged danger zone? Check. Feminist parable about husbands not listening to troubled wives? Check. The casting of reputable actors such as Farmiga and Sarsgaard also ups the movie's class quotient; Farmiga in particular has an emotional workout, and this gifted actress strikes few false notes even as the scenario becomes increasingly lurid. (There's some déjà vu here: Farmiga also played a mother realizing her kid was "not right" in Joshua, a much superior film.) Director Jaume Collet-Serra, of House of Wax notoriety, knows full well the unsettling weirdness of seeing a child commit murderous mayhem, and he presses all the buttons with something like unholy joy. The movie begins to drive off the rails even before a clumsy twist hits the fan near the end, and at that point, the mechanical exercise becomes downright silly. The Omen's Damien has nothing to worry about. --Robert Horton

DEEP IN A ROMANIAN FOREST, SCIENTISTS STUMBLE UPON THE RUINS OF A 13TH CENTURY ABBEY BUILT OVER THE ENTRANCE TO AN UNDERGROUNDCAVE SYSTEM. THEY HIRE A GROUP OF AMERICAN CAVE EXPLORERS TOINVESTIGATE THE CAVES. BUT THE GROUP'S ESCAPE ROUTE IS CUT OFF &THEY ARE HUNTED BY THE MONSTROUS CREATURES THAT LIVE DOWN BELOW.

The Cave (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

While it might give spelunkers a few helpful hints about using their equipment, The Cave is strictly routine as an Alien-styled monster show. The film's major achievement is its impressive setting -- not a real cave under the Carpathian mountains (where the ill-fated characters are exploring "the Amazon of underground rivers") but a lavishly convincing cave set built on a Romanian soundstage. This gives first-time director Brad Hunt (a second- and third-unit director on the Matrix trilogy) the movie's only claim to originality, as the cavernous interiors become a death trap for most of the nine-person team (led by Cole Hauser, and including Morris Chestnut, Daniel Dae Kim from TV's Lost, and Coyote Ugly's Piper Perabo) that's exploring the maze-like cave for reasons never fully explained (maybe they just wanted to test out their fancy gear). They're not alone down there, and creature-feature specialist Patrick Tatopoulos borrows from the H.R. Giger design-book with some gnarly critters that, in turn, borrow elements from The Thing to foment suspicion and anxiety among the dwindling crew of survivors. It's all familiar to genre buffs, but there's just enough in The Cave to satisfy the curiosity of its intended audience. Dumped into theaters for a marginal release in late summer 2005, it's precisely the kind of horror flick that finds a second life on DVD. --Jeff Shannon

Halloween II [VHS] Overview

"You can't kill the boogeyman," explains John Carpenter in Halloween, and to prove it he brings Michael Myers back in this handsome but grisly sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasence runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill, and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count and some strange tales about the Druids and pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail. --Sean Axmaker

Fox, in one of his first leading roles (it was shot before Back to the Future but released in that blockbuster's wake, and cashed in nicely). Although his werewolf makeup makes him look more like Bigfoot than Lon Chaney, Jr., Fox manages to convey his peppy personality even under all that hair. Teen Wolf Too, however, is not even bearable. Here Fox is replaced by Jason Bateman, who finds that his wolfish inclination helps him become the big dog on the college boxing team. The sole bright spot is veteran actor Paul Sand as the boxing coach. The rest is howlingly unfunny. - -Robert Horton

Horror Collector's Set (Bloody Mary / Mortuary / Memory / Salvage) Overview

BLOODY MARY
When a group of psychiatric hospital nurses invoke the spirit of Bloody Mary - a supposed urban myth - the slaughter begins. First, a young nursing assistant disappears, her body never found. Now, patients are turning up dead - battered beyond recognition, soaked in blood, their eyes ripped out. Mary's wrath has begun. Freed from her eternal prison behind the mirror's reflection, she unleashes a murderous, maniacal fury upon the asylum. Moving at will through mirrors, she strikes when her victims are unsuspecting, defenseless, and alone. Bloody Mary's legend is real, her vengeance is fatal, and to free her, all you have to do is say her name.

MORTUARY
In the small town of Santa Loraina, California, the decrepit, long-abandoned Fowler Funeral Home has become a local legend. As the story has it, Zeb Fowler bought the land to start up a ranching business, but something killed off all the cattle. To make ends meet, Zeb became the town mortician, and the Fowler house was turned into a funeral home - complete with a cemetery for a yard. But the strangest part of the story is the Fowler's son Bobby, whose face was so hideously disfigured it was hidden beneath a burial shroud. At age eight, Bobby mysteriously vanished, and ten years later his parents were found murdered - their faces smashed in. Locals believe that Bobby is still alive. Today, the Fowler Funeral Home is the stuff nightmares are made of - backed-up sewage pooling in the yard, a house of filth, decay, coffins, embalming equipment, and a strange black fungus growing on everything - and now the Doyle family is moving in. Having recently lost her husband, Leslie Doyle (Denise Crosby) is relocating her two children, Jonathan (Dan Byrd) and Jamie (Stephanie Patton), to Santa Loraina so she can become the town's new mortician. But the Doyles have no idea of the horror that they're in for. Soon they'll uncover what happened to the Fowlers - what evil inhabits the grounds of their estate and what happens to anyone who steps foot there...

MEMORY
Imagine accidentally ingesting a strange powder and being haunted by nightmarish visions - memories of a shadowy predator who abducts young girls. That's what happens to Dr. Taylor Briggs (Billy ZaneBloodRayne, Titanic) when he is exposed to a mysterious drug while lecturing in Brazil. Forced to relive the dark, twisted memories of a killer, Dr. Briggs embarks upon a lone journey to unlock the mystery of a past that is not his own - and find a killer whose horrifying work may not be over... A mind-bending, psychological thrill-ride, Memory will make you question everything you experience - right up to a surprise twist ending that will rock the very core of your reality. Co-starring Tricia Helfer, Ann-Margret, and Dennis Hopper.

SALVAGE
Claire Parker is going to die. At the hands of a sadistic and depraved killer, she will endure a terrifying, unimaginably brutal death - and it will all happen again. After being beaten, dragged, sliced, and stabbed, Claire awakens at work - where it all began - untouched and unharmed. But the hellish ordeal is far from over. The madman is back and he's ready for more blood...

The Uninvited Overview

UNINVITED - DVD Movie

The Uninvited Specifications

The china-doll features of Emily Browning (A Series of Unfortunate Events) are the eerie center of The Uninvited, an American remake of the wildly popular Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters. Browning stars as Anna, a young girl being released from a mental hospital following the harrowing death of her mother. But when she returns home, she discovers her father (David Strathairn) has fallen under the sexual spell of her mother's former nurse, Rachael (Elizabeth Banks, Zack and Miri Make a Porno), despite the open hostility of Anna's sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel, John Tucker Must Die). When Anna sees the ghost of her mother point at Rachael and scream "Murder!", Anna and Alex begin to investigate Rachael's past and make some unsettling discoveries. The Uninvited combines two horror trends: Twist endings (in this case, more than one) and recycling Asian horror images (particularly wet, crawling corpses). There's nothing particularly outstanding about The Uninvited, but it's superior to more lackluster Asian horror remakes like One Missed Call. The three lead actresses all have strangely glossy faces that look molded out of plastic, which adds a perhaps unintentional layer of creepiness. --Bret Fetzer
