The Grudge (Unrated Director's Cut) Overview

GRUDGE:EXTENDED CUT - DVD Movie

The Grudge (Unrated Director's Cut) Specifications

It's not the scary hit that The Ring was in 2002, but The Grudge makes a similarly convincing case for American remakes of popular Japanese horror films. Barely a year passed between the release of Takashi Shimizu's creepy ghost story Ju-On: The Grudge and the production of this American remake, set in Tokyo and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in her first post-Buffy horror film. About the only significant difference between the two films is the importing of a mostly-American cast (including Bill Pullman, Clea DuVall and Grace Zabriskie), but The Grudge was reconfigured (by screenwriter Stephen Susco) to allow Shimizu to refine and improve the spookiest highlights of his earlier version, which enjoyed previous incarnations as a short film and two made-for-Japanese-video features. Surprising box-office analysts with a million opening weekend, The Grudge may disappoint hard-core horror fans because it lacks gore and graphic violence, but as a creepy tale about a very haunted house, it's guaranteed to send a few chills up your spine. --Jeff Shannon

Halloween- Unrated Director's Cut Feature

  • HALLOWEEN ROB ZOMBIE/UNRATED DIR. CUT (DVD MOVIE)

Halloween- Unrated Director's Cut Overview

Rob Zombie (The Devil’s Rejects), “modern American horror’s most eccentric and surprising filmmaker,” (Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times) reinvents the ultimate slasher classic, unleashing Michael Myers for a bloody rollercoaster of a rampage like fans have never seen. Including a retelling of the original story that unfolds at a breakneck pace, as well as a chilling new introduction that finally reveals the secrets behind Myers’ disturbing childhood, Halloween breathes new life into one of film history’s most terrifying tales. “It will leave you speechless” (Spooky Dan, Bloody-Disgusting).

Halloween- Unrated Director's Cut Specifications

More of a supercharged revamp than a remake, Rob Zombie's take on John Carpenter's Halloween expands the back story of masked killer Michael Myers in an attempt to examine the motivation for his first deadly attack, as well as some reasons for his longevity as a horror icon. Zombie's Myers is a blank-eyed teen (played by Daeg Faerch) whose burgeoning mental problems are left unchecked in a horrific home environment; harassed by schoolmates, a randy sister, and his mother's deadbeat boyfriend (William Forsythe, terrific as usual), Myers' homicidal explosion seems inevitable, and intervention by Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell, who offers a fast-talking, hippiefied version of the Donald Pleasance character) does little to impede his development into a mute, unstoppable killing machine (Tyler Mane) bent on finishing off the only survivor of his family's massacre--his sister, now grown into teenaged Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton). Opening up the psychological motivation of a cipher like Michael Myers is an interesting approach, but Zombie's script possesses neither a depth of character nor dialogue to offer more than a clichéd thumbnail character sketch, and devoting over a hour of the unrated cut's 120-minute-plus running time to this history feels bloated and self-indulgent (especially when compared to the lean efficiency of the Carpenter original). Zombie's Halloween isn't terribly suspenseful, either; he has a keen eye for visuals and the details of chaotic environments, but his scares are nothing more than brutal showcases for his special effects team. The end result barely surpasses the original film's numerous sequels, though the Who's Who of cult and character actors in the cast (including Zombie regulars Sid Haig, Bill Moseley and Ken Foree, as well as Brad Dourif, Udo Kier, Clint Howard, Richard Lynch, Danny Trejo, Dee Wallace, and Danielle Harris) adds a touch of late-night monster movie charm. However, the film's best performance belongs to the director's spouse, Sheri Moon Zombie, who brings unexpected pathos to the role of Myers' downtrodden mother.

The two-disc Unrated Director's Cut offers a full disc's worth of extras that should please Zombie fans; chief among the supplemental features is his commentary, which details the film's shooting history and the numerous edits required to deliver the theatrical version. A making-of featurette offers further details of Zombie's vision for the film, and there are featurettes on his cast choices and the many masks that Myers makes while incarcerated. Seventeen deleted scenes (two of which feature Adrienne Barbeau and Tom Towles) and an alternate ending (all with Zombie's commentary) are also provided, as well as footage from the casting sessions. A blooper reel, which is highlighted by unchecked mischief by McDowell and Dourif, offers the set's sole moment of levity. -- Paul Gaita

The Frighteners (Director's Cut) Overview

FRIGHTENERS DIRECTOR'S CUT - DVD Movie

The Frighteners (Director's Cut) Specifications

One movie lover's nightmare is another's raucous joyride, and this special effects-laden horror comedy is bound to split both camps right down the middle. (Or, as Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide puts it, "definitely not for all tastes but a wild time for those who get into it.") Michael J. Fox plays a psychic investigator who can actually see ghosts, and lives with a trio of undead spirits who scare people to promote Fox's ghost-busting business. In a town infamous for serial killings, a new series of deaths prompts Fox to induce his own out-of-body experience so he can battle death in a spirit-plagued netherworld where evil reigns supreme--or something like that. So much happens in this chaotic film that you might feel like you're watching several movies at once--a slasher pic, a supernatural thriller, and a black comedy all rolled into a nonstop showcase for grisly makeup and a dozen varieties of special effects. It's an odd but wildly inventive film from New Zealand director Peter Jackson, who earned critical acclaim for his previous film Heavenly Creatures and would later create the ingenious pseudo-documentary Forgotten Silver. --Jeff Shannon

The Tox Box (The Toxic Avenger - Unrated Director's Cut / The Toxic Avenger Part II - Unrated Director's Cut / The Toxic Avenger Part III - Unrated Director's Cut / Toxic Crusaders: The Movie) Specifications

Despite a roster of disreputable films that includes everything from Bloodsucking Freaks to Terror Firmer, Troma Films' crowning achievement remains its comic book tribute/parody The Toxic Avenger (1985) and its pair of 1989 sequels. The comedy/action/sci-fi effort, about a crime-fighting monster spawned from chemical sludge, is as proudly crude as Troma's other films, but also genuinely funny and competently directed by company chiefs Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. The combination of slapstick and splatter helped earn the film the broadest audience recognition of any Troma film prior to Tromeo and Juliet––so much so, in fact, that several years later, the Toxic Avenger would be given his own Saturday morning cartoon.

Troma's affection for Toxie is made abundantly clear with The Tox Box, a lavish (by the company's standards) four-disc package that contains the three features as well as four episodes of Toxic Crusaders, Toxie's animated adventures. Troma fanatics should note that that the discs for Toxic Avenger I and III are largely identical to versions that were released independently within the last few years, but the disc for Toxic Avenger II is a true "uncut" version (with more violence) that differs markedly from the previously released R-rated DVD. As with all Troma DVDs, each disc is packed with supplemental material, from Lloyd Kaufman's hilarious (and often unhinged) commentary to a wealth of excised scenes, trailers, and production stills. Toxic Crusaders even includes a pair of '40s-era serials in their entirety to fill out its scant running time. Cineastes may decry that lowbrow material such as this has been given the deluxe treatment, and even Toxie fans may wonder if this much Troma is good for their mental health, but DVD buyers must admit that The Tox Box is an embarrassment of riches. --Paul Gaita

Horror Movies Customer Reviews

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsThe Toxic Avenger Troma is a masterpiece while the sequels are decent the first is a classic.

The Toxic Avenger-*****- funny dark comedy features a nerdy janitor who is targeted and accidentally falls into toxic waste and becomes a hero around Tromaville and then the fun begins. The scene is a classic Mexican restaurant as well as the head crushing scene. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are geniuses.

The Toxic Avenger Part 2 -**- I do not remember thistoo well but the plot is Toxie (aka Melvin) in Japan.

The Toxic Avenger Part 3: The Last Temptation of Toxie-So-so chapter Toxie work for a company called Revelation to help his rear view and blind girl soon discovers the boss is a bad devil. The scene shop is another classic punk movie where you go and steal one of those punk VHS rewinder come hand in hand and the first floor to be ground and then get Toxie and jams a mop in hishead and twists his right foot and head squirts blood everywhere. Overall, the film The Toxic Avenger B-movies are watchable, with good production values and great special effects.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsYou cant hate Toxie or Troma - A. Pierre - Somewheres
Troma is an excellent company. There are dvd dvd chock full of great extras and the menus are always fun to watch. While Tox Box is out of print and hard to find cheap, I took it anyway. The film claims that its full of blood, but the first isn't really creepy. The plot is easy to follow and can be fun. I can not understand why has not yet taken part 4 in the set instead of a cartoon. The Toxic Avenger is a good buy. All films are campy and fun. I recommendwatching the series.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsA Respect Super Hero - Henry - Singapore
A boy turns into a super hero with the help of toxic wastes. Helping everyone to fight the evil monster loving all away.A appeased his good deed. You need to get this box set.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsOriginal is excellent, the rest are horrible. - D. Scarpelli - Chicago, IL
To be brief, the original film is a great cult classic B-movie fans. The other films should not have been done. I could not even watch more than 15 minutes of the third film. Part 3 was almost as Van Helsing.
