Buffy the Vampire Slayer Overview

Blonde, bouncy Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is your typical high school cheerleader-- her goal is to "marry Christian Slater and die" and nothing gets in her way when it's time to shop. But all that changes when a strange man (Donald Sutherland) informs her she's been chosen by fate to kill vampires. With the help of a romantic rebel (Luke Perry), Buffy is soon spending school nights protecting L.A. from Lothos, the Vampire King (Rutger Hauer), his sidekick. Lefty (Paul Ruebens) and their determined gang of bloodsuckers. It's everything you'd expect from a teen queen in the Valley.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Specifications

Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 tongue-in-cheek vampire comedy is sugarcoated horror, an unusual mix of the cute and scary, with a splash of postmodern pop nonsense to give culture critics something to think about. Kristy Swanson plays a Valley Girl who learns she belongs to a line of ancient vampire killers. After training under the watchful eye of a mentor (Donald Sutherland), she becomes a spandex-wearing, kung-fu kicking, stake-stabbing babe and the mortal enemy of a narcissistic master vampire (Rutger Hauer). The accent is all on cheery attitude, though the action can be as authentically unnerving as any other halfway decent monster movie. Paul Reubens, formerly Pee-wee Herman, has a small role as Hauer's fanged familiar. --Tom Keogh

Horror Movies Customer Reviews

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsGreat teen movie. Valley Girls accurate, real air heads. Simple plot. Luke Perry's fourth film before SNL. Frist Hilary Swank film before it's done 90210. Do not expect much from this movie is 1992 and that is a laugh riot. It 's like the whole Buffyverse began.

Horror Movies Customer Reviewsi ordered this movie and instead of getting another one refund instead - bonnie collier -
I ordered this film was damaged and stopped and started and the voices are out of sync so instead of replacing the damaged goods all I got was a refund

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsI was just curious - K. Pease - Riverside, CA
I got this movie because I saw the TV show and wanted to see what the movie was like. This film is not so great and if not for the TV series, would probably fall off the face of the planet. Do yourself a favor and just try to rent somewhere.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsIn The Words of Joss Whedon: "It was funny when I wrote it." - Pat Shand - Freeport, NY USA
As fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the television series know, this film from 1992 does not work as a prequel to the series. Creator Joss Whedon did write the script, but all the freshness and creativity has been sucked out by the director, the lines have been misread or misinterpreted the whole, and the production team alone has not got what Whedon was trying to say. After this introduction, comparisons between the film and the series will stop, but I just thought I'd warn anyone who mightJoss Whedon to be back at work, that this movie is nothing like watching Buffy, Joss. That can be found in the TV series and now the cartoons. But as for this film ...

One might think that this could be a lovely, movie cheese. One would think that the bittersweetness of a bad director Joss Whedon ruin the vision would fade once the movie starts. You might think that the film could be so bad that, like all the corniest movies, it would be fun because ofmanifest the cheesiness. But ... no. Scenes that should be hilarious - the death of a non long Paul Rubens - was so dreadfully unfunny I discussed seriously off the film, although there was only ten minutes left. Scenes that should be dramatic - Buffy "great victory" at the end, as the main scene of death - fell completely flat, due to misplaced pauses dramatic readings of bad lines well, and - Sorry, all - in Kristy Swanson as bad.
While the film is devoid of caprice or a true understanding of tissue Whedon feminist message in the script, is not bad. As one critic said, has paved the way for things to come, because without the film, there was never the show. Also, Luke Perry gave a beautiful performance as the pike, and the talent of Hilary Swank has managed to shine through the nastiness of this film, despite how small his role was. But apart from the actors, some gems in the script, and arandom hilarious cameo by then no body of Ben Affleck, this film is worth seeing, no matter how much you love the "REAL Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

3 / 10
