The Last House on the Left (Unrated Collectors Edition) Overview

While on their way to a concert, two teenage girls are kidnapped and tortured by three escaped convicts.

The Last House on the Left (Unrated Collectors Edition) Specifications

Future Nightmare creator and Scream weaver Wes Craven's film debut is a primitive little production that rises above its cut-rate production values and hazy, grainy patina via its grimly affecting portrait of human evil infiltrating a middle-class household. The story is adapted from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, but the film has more in common with Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs as it charts the descent of a harmless married couple into methodical killers. A quartet of criminals--a distorted version of the nuclear family--kidnaps a pair of teenage girls and proceeds to ravage, rape, torture, and finally brutally murder them in the woods, unwittingly within walking distance of their rural home. The killers take refuge in the girls' own home, but when the parents discover just who they are and what they've done, they plot violent retribution.

Along with George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Craven helped redefine American horror with this debut--all three movies portray modern society crumbling into madness and horror. But, unlike his fellow directors, Craven gives his film an uncomfortable verisimilitude, setting it squarely in the heartland of modern America. While at times it's awkward and inconsistent, with distracting comic interludes, his handling of the brutal horror scenes is unsettling, and the death of the daughter is an unexpectedly quiet and lyrical moment. --Sean Axmaker

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsThis film inticed me, disgusted me and surprised me in the 70s. It still amazes me what Craven did it with minimum budget and it's still a classic, even if a low-budget classic.

Many people claim that this film was a sort of cult - something equal with Mean Streets and The Evil Dead - a film by a great director, before sold out and became famous.

Do not be fooled - it's nothing like that!

This film is as scary, a plot of rubbish and old-fashioned sense of what is shocking. All of these are forgivable in a film like Nosferatu can be forgiven. However, there is something so typical Wes Craven in this film, as the latestA Nightmare on Elm Street, that makes things bad and 'shocking' when in fact they were not even very bad at that time.

I wish I could say that this was a diamond in the rough and, indeed, there are some redeeming quality in it (the chainsaw bit at the end). Unfortunately, his manner and in general the dialogue affectatious illucid say it deserves its status as a non-worship.

PS With the release of new version of Wes Craven's mind, you may be tempted to watch this. However, just because a film is being republished does not perform well. Personally, I think that reveals more of the director * * The lack of originality, and desire to earn money for nothing.
After all, he would re-release of The Shining or The Evil Dead? Dear God, I hope not!

07/10: Since I have seen some horror movie shit today, the premise behind The Last House on the left is very familiar. Wes Craven puts substantially sadism heavy handed to contaminate two young women in order to create a picture of horror. Instead, the message behind The Last House on the Left is that rape women is fun. Everything I've seen in the photo was glorification. I could not see the look in horror The Last House on the Left, but rather be insultedwith the kind of thinking that Wes Craven presents. Judging on the production of The Last House on the Left, I thought the picture looked good, but too off-beat. I could not get out of reality as the dialogue is hammy, but to give credit, was much better than The Hills Have Eyes. As for the characters, I thought all did a pretty good job and did what they could do to make an effective framework, but they were one-dimensional at best. But the idea behind The Last House on the Leftnot a horror picture in my opinion. I mean, the movies I've seen before The Last House on the left was Henry: Portrait of a serial killer. For comparative purposes, Wes Craven comes off looking like a wannabe wrong. With its banner on The Last House on the Left manifesto, it says "It 's just a movie ... blah ... blah." Transport that message was to dissuade viewers from thinking that it was too frightening to think that the film was real. To be honest with you, I found the film terriblyboring to watch, let alone the terrifying feeling (which was zero). Taken from wiki, it says, "The opinion split with film critics, unsure whether the film is a strong affirmation of artistic trash or exploitation, or a combination of both. Audiences, however, flocked to see the film and, along with film such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is credited with bringing a new sense of realistic violence in the modern horror film genre. " Ahh, interesting ... does not mean that someone behind the lastHouse on the Left actually committed similar crimes and / or perhaps has had first-hand experience of it? Why is it so important to a film like The Last House on the left and leave the victims, especially women raped, lasting feeling terrible? Some say that the scene of rape in The Last House on the left was the worst place in a movie, well, this is not true. As a matter of fact, there is almost no vision of rape in it. Death Wish 3 blows the doors off of The Last House on the left when youtalk about rape. Some say that The Last House on the left is a masterpiece. Yes, of course, is probably too ill to realize that they are too far removed from society to discern between right and wrong. Wes Craven is one of them. Gee whiz, how did this man manage to make films again and again? The only film in his resume is impressive Scream while almost everything else he did was tedious and banal amateur, who do not respect the idea of what a "horror movie" is. Anyone in the world canThe Last House on the Left do. All they have to do is get a couple of girls who will be happy to work with scenes of rape and earn money. What saved me in the last house on the left is my suspicion that the young cop until I was reiterated in the closing credits that it was actually Martin Kove. Dang, young men seemed childish. The title The Last House on the Left had me thinking: "Why is it called that?" Surely, if you were to go this way, it would be like .... The first houseright. Ahh ... Wes Craven, The Last House on the Left has boasted safely in my worst list directors. We can not run, period.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsGlad I got it for just at WalMart. - Michael L. Emery - Las Vegas, NV
As a serious horror fan, I have heard of The Last House on the Left many times, even though he had never seen.
I found it on the shelf "$ 5 DVD" and since he had known as Wes Craven, Sean Cunningham and Steve Miner attached to it, I thought I had found a gem at a price of charcoal.

Having looked, I almost got exactly what I paid.

The acting is sometimes not all that important to me when it comes to horror, until the story and the effects are good.Unfortunately, I am very surprised that this is also considered a horror film, much less a horror classic.

Here's what displeasedmeabout this film:

1.) Acting has always seemed as if the actors had just gotten their time lines before the cameras.

2.) The story, while a good one, was exposed pretty badly ... people would stop speaking, but the scene would linger for several seconds, "graphic" scenes would suddenly cut to "comic" scenes or ascenes on a different part of the story, then return to scene graph "again. (Note that I put the words in quotes graphics and humor, it's because the scenes were neither graphic nor comic, but obviously tried), and there was never any moments in my vision that I felt any level of psychological drama or tense .

3.) The music was often cheerful, even in scenes that should have been dramatic. In fact, the music was just terrible allthrough this film.

4.) Plot holes! The Villans are shown in clothes that have gotten pretty dirty and untidy, their car had broken down so we are stuck in the woods, but when they go to Mari of the parent at home on the hill, which somehow managed to get clean almost business-like clothes, hair combed and no sign of dirt anywhere. This must have been a hell of a magic spring were splashing in the previous scene.
And the main female Villan (or is it"Villaness?) Can you switch from one kind of style," afro "hair, hair, and a couple of styles TIMES IN A FEW SECONDS between scenes!
And if I totally missed something, was never explained how the parents of Mari knew where to find their daughter.

There are several scenes of topless and bottomless, especially in the scenes of rapes and humiliation, and even those scenes are not done well.

This is really a bad film, made by guys who have much better luck for theusually later.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsNow it all makes sense why society is what it is - Don't tread on me - North Carolina, USA
I remember seeing young people in line to see this film when it was released. I just dismissed as just another horror movie. Well, I came across this on HBO one night in a hotel. I looked out of a total of 20 minutes of it.

What were the younger people by going to see this piece of violent, nauseating shit? And 'now appropriate for our country, especially the young, is going down the toilet. I wonder if some of them were even old enough to view it (but received intheater, however). Wes Craven was far better to make the Nightmare series. At least those could be dismissed as science fiction.

This film is just bad acting, violence and mutilation, disturbing beyond words. If you like this kind of film, I ask for your soul. As you might enjoy seeing a girl brutally raped? If this goes down, lock you up before you make yourself (and hopefully get shot for it).
