The extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings present the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second.
To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which, The Return of the King, merely won 11 Oscars). The LOTR extended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

I must admit that after watching the first film in this trilogy over the years back after the first reading of the books, I was disappointed in many dramatic licenses that have been taken in the script. I still think that the omission of the portion along the Shire is unfortunate, but after seeing these movies again with the incredible amount of special functions in a director's cut version, I'm more forgiving and I understand why it is virtually impossible to translate directlywritten in prose in a perfect representation on the screen. The fact that the writers did their best to transfer the general intention and meaning of what they interpreted Tolkien had in mind was good enough for me. That's why this is the only way to truly appreciate, and then enjoy the trilogy for me. Without the extended versions and bonus material, just missing a lot of greatness in the film, when you look at the original versions thearetical. I alsosaw this on a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD to 1080p very well makes me very happy to stay with this DVD package without the need to "upgrade" to Blu-ray. The packaging is also first class with all three films are receiving a very well designed box just before putting in a bigger box that contains all three. New Line Home Entertainment deserves a lot of compliments on this product that is obviously very well thought out and planned, and this fan has nothingreally to complain about.
The quality of picture and sound is excellent, the bonus materials are bulky and the overall packaging is first class.

LOTR Platinum Series Special Extended Edition - Dave36 - CAWhat can I say? If you really want to enjoy this trilogy for what it is, buy this! The standard DVD release are quite different in content. Some scenes are completely different. This edition compiles the film and gives you a much better experience. Have fun!

This is a really good anthology, best I've seen in a long time. Almost perfect in fact. The only thing is that I thought the boys present at the second floor would be a little 'more for certain things they do in their roles, other than that, great! This is not cheap looking, poorly acted, or done from a script written media as many of the most recent anthologies. Well done, as Twilight Zone The Movie, which has always been my favorite.

All the "good" reviews are clearly false.
The acting in it is atrocious, the special effects do not exist, and writing seemed as if it were written by a screenwriter porn.

The film is 90 minutes, but the whole aspect of it seemswas shot in less than an hour.

Hun? - Madelyn Pryor - Mesa, AZ United StatesThe Unknown Trilogy is a return serialized horror film, much in the vein of Tales from the Crypt before or HorrorTales From the Crypt Vault / Vault of Horror (Double Feature). These are three stories of 'horror' bound together by a narrator. These first two films were based on EC Comics, and have had some glimmer of horror.
However, the calm tone of Unknown Trilogy and the lack of follow through in some of the stories that makes this movie a pass in an easytowards more terrible price.
There are three stories represented here. The first concerns a player who is a loser and he finds himself very wicked to make a deal to save the skin. He has some great classical actors in it (even if only to make cameos). I liked the pace, I thought the story and writing was decent and I loved the actors. I was like "cool! Bring on the next two!". The second story is about a boy who is afraid of many things, especially funeral homes.When his friends the courage to visit one, he is facing his greatest fear. In this story, I found the ending trite and a bit 'lame. It was not delivered with enough explanation or taste. When the narrator says that his next bit (I can not say anything without giving away the end) I asked: "When did this happen? Hun? What was the significance of cough, and ..." That was why I decided to write it off and go to the next story. This was a man who lost his littleChristmas and boy sinks into a terrible depression. I was engaged in the final 10 minutes. 10 minutes! Then I wasted my 15 others to nod and say "Yes".
The uneven quality of the three stories and the lack of endings and completed two of my three stories earns three stars. The three stars are really for the first story of the gambler. If you feel so inclined, watch the first story and then do not watch the next two. Just do not. So think you're investing in 30minutes darn decent movie.
We also know, this is a very quiet, very psychological horror film. There are moments of real terror in question, so if you are looking for any of this, run far, far away.

The movies were not classics, the acting and scripts are average at best. So why would anyone be interested in these three films filmed 45 years ago? If you want the people involved, whether you're a movie if you recognize the name of the director Roger Corman, then you find that this DVD.
Corman himself did not interact with someone in a comment, there are some interesting background information at the beginning of each film. He has no information about the work, but tells usexactly what he was trying to do, and what he had to go to reach it. It 'nice to hear his views on all three films.
My favorite is the revelation that first thought Corman Allison Hayes (50 foot woman herself) to star in the last woman on earth, but later decided Betsy Jones-Moreland, in a game, making her role, instead of.
The main pleasure here is the last woman on earth. The film itself is a low budget mishmosh. The brilliance of this DVDis the comment of its stars Betsy Jones-Moreland and Anthony Carbone. They are joined by Steve Latshaw and Fred Olen Ray. If you are the "educated," said film to build in things that should not be - tired of listening to the struggles of Moreland and Carbone. All cases were met with impunity. They openly discuss co-star Edward Wain - which is actually the future Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Towne.
The film is presented in widescreen (likeCreature from the Haunted VAS) and for the first time in many years of Eastman color.
All videos are fun (creature has a comment from Moreland, Coal and Latshaw).
Director-writer Joel M. Rapp left a comment for the third movie, a movie called War BATTLE OF BLOOD Iceland.
Extras include a photo album showing the cards actually turned instead to lobby stills, trailers from 11 movies Corman extra scenes for the movie so much when they were placed on the market addfor television a few years later, and some movie trailers trilogy.
But if any of these titles are familiar to you, or are interested in this age range, this CD at a reasonable price, is a fine evening's entertainment!

Producer-director Roger Corman shot three very different low-budget films back to back in Puerto Rico over a period of a few weeks in 1960; ordinarily, this feat would be nothing short of astonishing, but Corman's reputation as a fast and frugal filmmaker was legendary. What is surprising about the three pictures--The Last Woman on Earth, Creature from the Haunted Sea, and Battle on Blood Island--is that they're all entertaining and irreverent pictures (more so the latter in the case of Creature), and possess the independent spark that Corman has brought to all of his productions over the last 40-plus years. Last Woman is an intriguing reworking of The World, the Flesh, and the Devil, with a gangster (Anthony Carbone), his wife (Betsy Jones-Moreland), and his lawyer (Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne, who appears here under the name Edward Wain) struggling to survive after a mysterious holocaust has left them the apparent last people alive on an island. Creature is the silliest of the trio, a comedic sort-of remake of Beast from Haunted Cave, with Carbone again as a gangster dealing with Cuban soldiers and a monster on a remote island. The picture is most notable for its ludicrous title fiend, but the kitchen-sink humor (very reminiscent of Mad magazine) retains a certain lowbrow charm. Battle for Blood Island (based on a short story by Phillip Roth) is the only film on the disc not directed by Corman; Joel M. Rapp d a moderately tense WWII actioner about a pair of American soldiers pinned down in a cave by the Japanese. Obviously, fans of Corman's oeuvre will receive the biggest thrill from this disc, which offers the best presentation of these films (all long in the public domain) to date--Woman and Creature are both widescreen, with Woman also benefiting from an Eastmancolor print--and the extras, which include introductions by Corman, commentaries by Carbone, Jones-Moreland, and Rapp, a gallery of lobby cards, and a trailer reel for other Corman creature features, including The Little Shop of Horrors and Attack of the Crab Monsters, are the icing on this budget-conscious cake. --Paul Gaita
