This terrific haunted-house thriller proved an unforgettable experience for 1960 audiences. Set in the mansion of a deceased scientist named Dr. Zorba, the story finds the late occult practitioner's nephew discovering a bunch of elusive spooks on the premises that can be seen only through Zorba's ghost-viewing glasses. Produced and directed by legendary showman William Castle, master of such garish, audience-pleasing gimmicks as flying skeletons and electric-shock theater seats, 13 Ghosts was hyped with an innovative process called "Illusion-O." Movie patrons were furnished with special, red-and-blue-colored glasses that allowed them to choose to see the titular specters or not. This DVD does not provide a working replica of the Illusion-O viewer (earlier copies did), but it offers both a straight, black-and-white version of the feature (no viewer necessary) and a version with the film's original tinted scenes requiring the viewer for extra fun. Also included is Castle's own introduction, in which he explains the Illusion-O technique. --Tom Keogh

The only way to see the movie with a couple of replica Illusion-O "ghost viewers" that were once part of this DVD package but are no longer available. FEAR NOT, however, if you have this DVD and not the viewers. You can substitute a pair of 3-D anaglyph glasses (red cellophane on the left side and right side of the blue cellophane glasses) and when the original sequences of the film appear illiusion-o ... wear glasses and cover both the right side of blue glasses to see ghosts orcoverage of the Red left the glasses, if you are a 'Fraidy cat and want to eliminate the ghosts from the screen altogether. These glasses are available through several vendors on the internet and cheap enough (some couples under $ 1) for each member of your family for a couple. This is a GREAT Wm. Castle film "gimmick" and I origianlly seen in the movies when I was 10 ... in 1960. Enjoy.
a good ghost story with clever illusions - Channel KDK12 - New Orleans, LAA paleontologist poor can not pay the bills until his strange Uncle Zorba dies, leaving him his house and its ghostly inhabitants 12. The scientist tries to find out what the ghosts want with the help of a pair of glasses that reveal the electronic traces of the ghost, his sprite of a child makes friends with the ghosts and the wife is pushed to its limits with their antics. And somewhere in the house is the last home of his uncle's fortune Zorba, but only the ghosts can reveal whereit is not. All ends well for everyone - well, everyone except the Ghost 13! A good old ghost story with innovative style special effects, including an interesting look at concerns about science and scientists dominateed, 50 and 60.

lovely, silly and fun - Philip Ford - Lubbock, Texas United StatesI want to see this movie again and it's been years and I must say that was funny. I want to give you readers a hint of what to do if you do not have a viewer and it's easy. If you have a couple of old-style 3-D glasses with red and blue lenses, so you can view the movie as it was in theaters, the effect is silly, but fun to look around and get a pair for the right to see this film way. The movie would be great for Halloween night and maybe a fun date movie. It isthe right kind of horror movie for kids as they find it funny. Enjoy.
