The Mothman Prophecies Specifications

Described by director Mark Pellington as "a psychological mystery with naturally surreal overtones," The Mothman Prophecies begins like an ambitious episode of The X-Files. Richard Gere brings adequate torment, portent, and ambiguity to his role as a Washington Post reporter and grieving widower plagued by a mysterious, unseen urban legend known as the Mothman. Pellington develops subtle doom and gloom that's as effective as the paranoid streak he brought to Arlington Road. As the Mothman terrifies a West Virginia town, he remains an enigma, glimpsed almost subliminally. This--along with a magnificently creepy soundtrack--amplifies the movie's surreal overtones while keeping everything else (unsettling phone calls, prophesied disasters, suggestions of the afterlife) completely unexplained. With Laura Linney and Debra Messing in underdeveloped roles, The Mothman Prophecies feels a bit underdeveloped itself (and ends in desperate need of Mulder and Scully). But if you like your weirdness open-ended, this moody thriller's worth a look. --Jeff Shannon

Horror Movies Customer Reviews"I came to realize that we have observed the complex forces that have always been an essential part of our environment."
John Keel author of The Mothman Prophecies

The collapse of the Silver Bridge is provided by people who deal with an entity known as the Mothman.

A good movie if your in the mood for a realistic science-fiction horror. In fact it is based on a true story. Alan Bates and Will Patton are fantastic in this film. RichardGere has been a great and interesting role for him

The phone Indrid Cold scene is terribly real and well done.

No comparison with the 'Men in Black I was very disappointed.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsAn ink stain on the television screen... - Andrew Ellington - I'm kind of everywhere
"The Sixth Sense ', the 1999 blockbuster (innovative if you want), great success that has earned a ridiculous amount of attention an Oscar for a film of its kind, has generated a huge pile of photocopies films that tried very hard to build M off the foundation. Night Shyamalan created. Some of then rose ("The Others '), some flops (" Dragonfly') and some of them fell somewhere in between.

I think the 'middle' is a good place for `The Mothman Prophecies'.

Coming off asa mixture of incomplete `The Sixth Sense 'and` The Blair Witch Project', `The Mothman Prophecies 'has some' go for it, but also throws a lot of his promise away, failing to develop his themes in far stronger.

John Klein is a widower in mourning / journalist who is consumed with a mysterious urban legend involving a horrific creature known as the Mothman. Prophesies with strange and even stranger `occurrences', Klein stays in Point Pleasant, West Virginia for a longtoo long in search of answers that are not going to come.

They are all about ambiguity, and I like open-ended, but something `The Mothman Prophecies' that feels incomplete. The concept here is pretty fascinating, but it feels largely underdeveloped, even with the intensity that surrounds the Climax Films (which I still vividly in my mind's eyes). Character development found in the likes of John Klein (portrayed with sincerity hatching by Richard Gere) is ratherexceptional for a film that fails to tie any loose ends, but he is the only aspect of the film that feels as if it has received fair treatment. The Mothman, which should have received the most attention, seems to fall into oblivion here. Yes, the film captures some very disturbing tones (thanks to a score that was tailored to the fear and some very cool camera shots), but the real meat of the 'happening' that seems to be missing here.

I'm not familiar with the accounting is true 'thatinspired this movie, so I can not say with any authority whether or not this film captures the reality that you recognize. All I can say is that I'm sure there is more lurking beneath this story could have been fleshed out to create something eternally disturbing. Instead, this film raises questions fails to respond, crafting an experience so horrifying that cools immediately after watching.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsMothman Prophecies DVD - Christine S. Shealer -
This is a great film. I saw it with my husband when he was released in theaters. It is based on true events, the book "The Mothman Prophecies, John Keel covers. The film, Hollywood-style license Creative has taken the events and do not cover many of the real events. He also changed the characters names and their relationships to each other. However, it was still a very entertaining movie and well worth watching.

I love this movie. It 's just creepy enough without being too much cheese and really keeps your attention. It 's also a good movie to watch and relax late at night. E 'along the lines of a thriller-esque Shyamalon / suspense movies and I find that it delivers more when I watch it. Definite re-watching potential here.
