Repulsion- (The Criterion Collection) Overview

Roman Polanski followed up his international breakthrough, Knife in the Water, with this controversial, chilling tale of psychosis, starring Catherine Deneuve as Carole, a fragile, frigid young beauty cracking up over the course of a terrifying weekend. Left alone by her vacationing sister in their London flat, Carole is haunted by specters real and imagined, and her insanity grows to a violent pitch. Thanks to its unforgettable attention to disturbing detail and Polanski’s unparalleled adeptness at turning claustrophobic space into an emotional minefield, Repulsion remains one of cinema’s most shocking psychological thrillers.

Repulsion- (The Criterion Collection) Specifications

Roman Polanski was still a newcomer to the world of cinema when he unleashed this unforgettable exercise in skin-crawling terror. Repulsion was the Polish director's first film in English, but that hardly mattered: much of the movie is as wordless (and as weird) as the silent Nosferatu. The young Catherine Deneuve plays a Belgian girl stranded in '60s London, a shy beauty with no social skills. When her sister leaves their shared flat, Deneuve goes gradually, quietly, completely mad. Her world becomes Polanski's paintbox, as the devilish director distorts reality via a series of surrealistic touches (grasping hands that protrude from elastic walls) and out-and-out murderous horror. Very few films cast the kind of eerie spell that this 1965 classic achieves, and it clearly points the way toward Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. As with most of the director's work, what is unsettling is not the overt violence, but the terrifying sense of emptiness and isolation, and the boiling unease inside one's own mind. --Robert Horton

Horror Movies Customer Reviews

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsYes, the external beauty may in fact hide the ugliness within. Inevitably there is a conflict between the two at some point and when this happens, the internal twisted soul who will win, with disastrous consequences for anyone who gets too close - the theme of this film chilling and repugnant that accounts for its originality. Polanski, being a man of wit, using a variety of effective techniques to get the whole story, including casting Deneuve as Carole disturbed the bait-and-switchrole of a good beautician crazy - paradox and perversity are Polanski's stock and trade. It continues not only ask "how can it be?" but "how could he have proved that?" and maybe even "in which Dr. Phil when you need him?" The central issue is resolved in the final scene of the film by a still photo of Carole as a young girl with a scary, crazy look in his eyes (to indicate that it may have been abused by a family member.) In the last shot, the camera closes inover one eye - presumably the window to the soul - at the same time, closing the circle, final assembly because that's how the movie starts. (Note that the ominous theme of the film Polanski has not deterred in the least by chasing beautiful women throughout his life.) The DVD I watched comes with a commentary by Polanski and Deneuve.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsI love the movie but the dvd is horrible - Chris -
I recently received this dvd as a birthday gift. Polanski's Repulsion is a film should have, but the quality of this DVD as soon as it justice. Be aware that some of the comments on this page is for the test version and not this film. I was brought Miss and now I'm stuck with what is almost unwatchable. I'm quite familiar with the movies and have a lot, including some rare foreign films, and I have never met this poor quality on a DVD purchased. It 's a shame because this filmis amazing and a must own for those who appreciate good film. However, almost half the price of the dvd criterion might still be worth buying.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsIt Feels Sooooo Good When It's Over. - Yasha Banana -
Roman Polanski, you excuse the expression, * * violated the first law to direct the film and that is when you have a beautiful woman in a film as a director, you must bring out its full beauty. Put another way: a film director must know how a beautiful woman.

And, surprisingly enough, Roman Polanski has done in "Repulsion." He did not do that with a 21-year-old Catherine Denueve - Catherine Denueve generally regarded then and many years later as "the mostbeautiful woman in the world. "

If you do not believe it, look for the extras that this DVD is a documentary on the making of "Repulsion." In this documentary we see Catherine trying Denueve with Polanski and also speaking to the camera, ie, speaking to the documentary. And in it we see Catherine Denueve in all its glory - * * resplendent beauty.

But Polanski was blowing. He did not Denueve film properly. Now, one can say who did it on purpose, forTo the story. But I do not think so, I doubt very much. The entire movie was basically a knock-off, but had a limited budget and it showed.

In fact, Polanski had continued to make several excellent films, it is unlikely that this film was never re-issued by policy or by other companies.

The film is choppy, uneven, badly photographed (and not just Denueve), and after a while 'just plain annoying. Especially music. Timeand yet the music telegraphs the "horror" of a scene. So boring as the film, do not try to fall asleep while watching, because every 10 minutes * * music screeches to you, for one simple reason - to scare you with the volume of its SCREEEEEEECH!

In other words, a scary movie should not be scary because the music puncture eardrums.

If music in a film that tells you how you should react emotionally, is probably not a good movie. And '* * that the film should be telling you how to react to it, not loud, annoying, wired "music.

Everybody's talent is wasted in this film. Polanski's considerable talents are wasted Denueve talents are wasted. But then again, what can you expect, the film was made cheaply.

I have the feeling that Polanski himself was surprised that it was reprinted, so that when asked to do a director's commentary for the DVD, what to do,admit this was not a movie so great? In fact, the first part of his commentary he admits that one of the opening scenes was not shot very well.

A well-made film must be thin. And 'underlying subtlety of a good movie that makes you want to see it again and again, getting something new every time I see him.

But this is not.

The purchase of this movie is like paying a prostitute to hit you over your head with high heel shoes. Why?Because it feels sooooooooooo good when it's over.

Horror Movies Customer ReviewsGreat transfer of a great film!!! - Josh - Los Angeles, CA
This is a superb psychological thriller in the vein of Hitchcock, but perhaps' even more convoluted. The movie opens with a general sense of foreboding and paranoia and tension mounted throughout the film. The atmosphere is expertly managed by creative camera work and set design and performance obsessed with Catherine Deneuve. The transfer looks great on Bluray and stresses the cinematography beautiful, starkly illuminated and reflects the deterioration of the mental character to the whole film.Much recommended for lovers of classic thrillers and a good introduction to "art house" for the uninitiated.
